The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department maintains Crash and Rescue equipment at Fire Stations 28 and 43. The San Diego Regional Airport Authority, maintains Rescue 1, 2, 3 and 5 at San Diego International Airport.

Rescue 1 carries 1,000 gallons of water, 130 gallons of foam (light water) and 500 pounds of Halon 1211, a chemical designed to smother fire. Rescue 2 and Rescue 3 each carry 3,200 gallons of water and 410 gallons of foam. Rescue 5 carries 3,200 gallons of water and 410 gallons of foam. Those four crash and rescue rigs do not leave San Diego International Airport.

Station 28, located next to Montgomery Field and Station 43, located near Brown Field, each house Crash & Rescue rigs which carry 1,000 gallons of water, 130 gallons of light water (foam) and 500 gallons of Halon 1211.
