The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Hazardous Materials Incident Response Team (HIRT) is a highly trained group of firefighters who protect lives and property from incidents involving hazardous materials such as chemical explosions and spills.

The Hazardous Materials Incident Response team is a San Diego City and County effort with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and San Diego County Department of Environmental Health employees staffing HIRT.

Since 1993, HIRT responds as a five person team to Hazardous Material Emergencies for all of San Diego County. San Diego City HIRT members also respond to other cities in the County and some military installations and Indian land.

Environmental Response Team
If an incident involves abandoned waste, such a motor oil, which does not require the advanced equipment and testing of HIRT, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Environmental Response Team or ERT is dispatched.
