Project Description and Purpose
The City of San Diego is replacing approximately 3 1/2 miles of water mains in south Clairemont with new pipes. The existing 8, 12 and 16-inch diameter cast iron mains were originally installed as early as 1950. The existing pipes are nearing the end of their service life and need to be replaced with pipes made of a more durable plastic material.
The purpose of the project is to reduce maintenance needs, increase the size of existing mains to better serve the area, improve service reliability and minimize future water main breaks caused by aging pipes. The estimated project cost is $5.7 million and is included as part of the Water Department's ongoing capital improvement projects.
Construction Information
The water mains to be replaced are located under several residential and commercial streets. The replacement work will be done in stages. Not all streets will be affected by construction at the same time. The anticipated work schedule and locations will be included in the project newsletters and on this Web site. Newsletters will be mailed on a periodic basis to properties in the work zone.
Work Schedule
Construction crews will begin installing temporary water lines (highlines) in fall 2008. Work to replace the water mains will begin in spring 2009 and continue until summer 2010. Normal work hours will be Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Hours may be extended or night work implemented to handle any unforeseen circumstances or to avoid heavy traffic periods around major intersections.
