Central Police Garage Project

Rendering of Central Police Garage

The Central Police Garage Project consists of a redevelopment of the areas surrounding the San Diego Police Pistol Range (SDPPR) to accommodate relocation of the San Diego Police Department's Vehicle Maintenance Facility (VMF) which currently occupies the site of the proposed library at 12th and K Streets. The SDPPR property is located at the northeast and southeast corner of the intersection of Home Avenue and Federal Boulevard in the community of City Heights within San Diego. The SDPPR site currently supports police operations associated with SWAT and K-9 facilities as well as a pistol range. The redevelopment of the areas surrounding the (SDPPR) would involve the construction of a new VMF to the west of the pistol range on land currently supporting the K-9/SWAT facilities. The K-9/SWAT facilities would be moved to vacant land, east of the pistol range.

A description of each of the new or relocated facilities as they would exist after the proposed reconfiguration is provided below.

Vehicle Maintenance Facility

The VMF would be constructed on the west side of the pistol range. The primary portion of the facility would be located at the northeast corner of Home Avenue and Federal Boulevard; however, land at the southeast corner would also be utilized.

The primary feature of the VMF would be a two-story building comprised of 28,000 square feet. Access would be from Federal Boulevard. This portion of the project would utilize approximately 2.36 acres. The site would be developed with a fuel station, an oil lubrication site, and a vehicle wash bay. The VMF would include administrative offices as well as vehicle service and storage space. Approximately 8,000 square feet of space would be included in the second story of the structure. In addition, a total of 113 surface parking spaces would be located around the building to provide short-term parking for the employees and visitors and long-term vehicle storage.

K-9/SWAT Facilities

The K-9 and SWAT operations currently share facilities located west of the pistol range. To make room for the VMF building, the K-9/SWAT facilities would be moved to vacant land to the east of the pistol range and north of Federal Boulevard. The new K-9/SWAT facilities would include the construction of an approximately 6,000 to 6,500 square-foot, one-story building, the creation of an approximately 40,000 square-foot training field, 66 parking spaces, and 6,000 square feet of kennel space. The total acreage for this portion of the project is approximately 2 acres.
