At a recent City Council meeting, I referenced a speech made by John Spreckels in 1923. I expressed my frustrations over opposition to projects that come along that make San Diego a better place and improve our quality of life. In the speech, Mr. Spreckels said "The moment anybody appears with any proposition of a big constructive nature, the small town undertakers get busy digging its grave." Read the speech (PDF: 502K)

Remembering the Wildfires
November 29, 2007
Many people have asked me to share the photos that I took during and immediately following the 2007 Firestorm here in San Diego County. It is amazing to see the devastation that the fires left in their wake and it serves as a stark reminder that we need to plan ahead and be better prepared for a future disaster. However, it was also uplifting to see a community come together in time of need. See for yourself:
See an aerial slide show of the devastating aftermath of the fires.
See what wonderful things volunteers accomplished at the Qualcomm Stadium Evacuation Center.

November 19, 2007
In October 1999, a friend of mine participated in a 10K race and collapsed from sudden cardiac arrest. Two respiratory clinicians immediately initiated CPR before transporting him to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Ron McElliott was 56 years old. Sadly, if an automated external defibrillator or AED had been available, most likely Ron would be alive today. Full story...
Mini Dorms
Combating the Mini Dorm phenomenon has been a focus of mine for quite some time. Recently, I was pleased to have Councilmember Kevin Faulconer and City Attorney Mike Aguirre join my efforts in combating this Citywide issue. In early May, 2007 we held a public meeting on Housing Issues and Mini Dorms. We also held a public meeting last fall and since then I've brought this issue to the Land Use and Housing Committee that I chair. We made changes to the Land Development Update including parking restrictions, garage conversion restrictions, hardscape and minimum lot sizes. The Land Development Code Update that came out of the LU&H meetings will now be reviewed by the entire City Council at the July 9, 2007 meeting.
